The DEA has an annual “National Take-Back Initiative” aimed at collecting outdated and unnecessary prescription medications. Many seniors have medicine cabinets full of medications that they no longer need, or are expired. San Diego Homecare fully supports this program and participates every year in assisting and encouraging our clients to submit their medications that conform to the programs guidelines.
For our clients the primary concern is; an elderly person could mix up medications if there are too many bottles in their medication cabinet. Additionally, disposing of expired medications is important since taking an expired medication can cancel the purpose of taking the medication. Lastly, the abuse of prescription medications is growing rapidly and a real problem with our young people. By disposing of medications that are no longer needed we can make them unavailable to possible abuse.
This past Saturday, Oct. 22nd, was the DEA’s annual event.
